Oops. The Kia Stonic "leaked" - winky face

June 20, 2017

Hot on the heals of the Kona, "leaked" images of the Kia Stonic means Kia wants some of your uniqueness  too.

It was just last week when we reported on the impressive but soon-to-be-boring fashion gimmick, the Hyundai Kona, and what we had to say about it were generally good things: Good except for the fact that it will age too quickly, and that that is the reality and nature of the consumer-driven and gimmicky B-Segment market - the market not quite tough enough to go off-roading but adventurous enough to take a few dirt road alternatives at least.

Kia now, in an act of "unintentional" revenge has come to steal some of the Kona spotlight by "accidentally" leaking the pics of its own offering - of its Stonic, which we expect will be as impressive as the Kona when it too finally makes its way down South, which, like the Kona, is inevitable. South Africans will lap these up, like the very unique hipsters who chose the better, corporate giant of Samsung over Apple when the latter just got too mainstream and expensive. Winky face.

The Stonic, like the Kona, is full of all those things that will make you want it, and make you bored of it after a few months of having it, like YOLO splashes of cabin-filled colour, which in the case of the Stonic match its roof only and not its full coat of body paint. It's no doubt a classy move by Kia: Who wants that in-your-face matching lumo when you could have carefully placed crayon-flat splashes that give the same effect, but even better? Winky face.

If you're wondering why we're paying particular attention to its aesthetics and custom features, and not the car itself, here's why: The car itself will be very good when we eventually test drive it - no doubt about that - but, it won't be the reason that sends you over the edge to buy it. It will be the little things that do, like the colour splashes and matching roof, and Kia knows that too. That's why Kia claims it will be “the most customisable Kia ever, inside and out” and that's why they care enough to tell you about it.

You see, those things are the sorts of things that make you feel special and unique and that's a feeling that any car buyer should at least hope to have when they plunge themselves into the 5 year debt plan offered by the corporate giants of our "unique" aspirations, and the makers of things that make us all feel "special".

Kia, you clever lot.

Winky face.
