Another dodgy-looking EV concept unveiled!

February 28, 2018

This one, called the Sibylla is "alternative" if we're kind. But why, we ask, are electric car makers thinking again that alternative propulsion needs alternative looks?

In the last year or so, many of the major brands (Honda especially) unveiled electric concepts that look awesome so why, we ask, are newer electric cars like this here Sibylla suddenly reverting back to "alternative" looks (AKA ugly ones) to complement their alternative propulsion?

We have been very clear about it in the past: Electric cars will only be successful when electric is as desirable as petrol in four key areas - looks, performance, driving-range and price.

So, needless to say, we were ecstatic when electric cars really started looking good towards the end of last year because we love electric cars! In fact, up until recently, it was only the price of electric that had us concerned as we push on forward towards the electric 20s.

Indeed, most electric cars these days are looking fresh enough to look twice, driving far enough to nod impressively at and all seem to race to 100km/h in under 4 seconds, so what’s not to like besides their price tags? Even those are slowly coming down so all’s apparently looking good.

The Honda Urban EV and Sports EV. Too fresh! Beneath them, the VW I.D Buzz Concept.

Well, not all. Because now, twice in two days, two new electric cars have been unveiled that look unnecessarily “alternative” and hark back to the days when electric cars looked dodgy.

The Elextra. Jik.

The first, the squint-eyed nonsense called the Elextra EV and now this: The Giorgetto Giugiaro designed Sibylla that looks like a sleeping pod from another dimension, which, for some strange reason, is stuck in the 1970s. It looks like a wannabe-future-mobile of some low budget Star Trek or something that a pimp would drive in an episode from Black Mirror.

Still, it says a lot then about the Elextra EV that we happen to think that the Sibylla at least is better than that and admittedly, we do find this Sibylla somewhat appealing in an “alternative” sort of way. Admittedly, it’s not Honda Urban EV-level good looking or VW I.D. Buzz-level awesome but at least it’s something to look at.

Still, we’d really be reaching, much like a Cape hipster studying Woodstock graffiti, if we thought that this here Sibylla was redefining art for its innovation, which it is not. It’s dodge bro! Cool, but dodge.
