VW electric hypercar is the brand's future

April 24, 2018

As VW braces for an electric century, the I.D. R Pikes Peak is what its new models will look to.

It's not the first time we've brought you the VW I.D. R Pikes Peak and it's not the last time that you'll hear about it. Not because we necessarily like over the top electric race cars but because this one is very important.

Very.

The Pikes Peak will be the basis on which all future electric VWs are built and, as you can expect as many as 25 all-electric models over the next ten years, that's a whole lot of pressure for one little car even if it is an electric monster.

If you don't know it already or if you're unsure, hear this: Petrol cars will give way to electric cars whether we like it or not, whether it is the best technology available or not and whether or not the world has the infrastructure to cope. This will happen far sooner than we think so the Pikes Peak is very important. Very!

For the biggest car brand on the planet, electric success is essential. So, every model to come must be built on the success of a very successful pioneer. This is that pioneer!

0-100km/h in 2.25 seconds and 500kW are just two of the numbers that we love about it, but perhaps it's this number that's most impressive: 20%.

Bear with us a for moment...

Now, the Pikes Peak will be built for the famous 19,9 km hill climb race, Pikes Peak in America, where it will look to break the record there. But, during the race, 20% of its energy will be regathered at the wheels from hard breaking, which is nothing short of extraordinary.

Put it this way: Developing and polishing this sort of tech is outrageous. For, if you drive 1000km with numbers like that, essentially 200 km will be free, for nadda my brudda - free kms drawn from the energy of a brake pad.

Say what? It's awesome.

Watch this space. Many people believe that electric cars are boring but they're not. We are in the most exciting motoring time since Henry Ford decided that the automobile should be for the people.
