BMW 8 series coupe finally unveiled!

And it's nice. Very nice.

Mzansi behold. The BMW 8 Series coupe: Beautiful, sleek and everything that you'll ever dream about in an overpriced BMW from now until the end of time.

It is the flagship situated just beneath the flagship (the M8) and is exactly the machine that every politician will be salivating over when it finally goes on sale in South Africa in the first quarter of 2019.

Yes, even in rural and pot-holed Mpumulanga, this 8-series Coupe will feel like an angel and Deputy President David Mabuza will be wise to invest.

Starting at around R1.8 million only he probably could so the question will be a simple one: Blue or orange?

In blue it harks back to the concept that wooed us nearly a year ago which we, in the January 2018 issue of GT MAG, donned the 4th best concept design of 2017.

It was certainly the looker and our only worry was that the production version wouldn't nearly be as good. Well, here it is and, well, it is.

Well, not quite as good, but it is still very good looking and one of the best looking BMWs to come from the Bavarians in some time.

That is partly to do with how distinct it is: BMW, as we know, can suffer from Audi-disease, which makes it very difficult to tell which BMW is which if you don't read the back.

This one however is very distinctive and this particular one, the one you're looking at, the BMW 850i XDrive, is the only one that you'll ever have to worry about. Yes, the 850i is the only version of this coupe that South Africa will get so recognising it will be a lot easier.

Oh, and don't worry by the way, we will also get the BMW M8 but that will only come later...

This 850i however, is still very impressive (M8 aside) and arrives with a smacker of a 4.4 litre, twin-turbo V8 that will make you forget that you're actually in a large, luxurious GT cruiser. 0-100km/h will be BMW M4-beating good and will hit you with a 3.7 seconds dash, which is only 0.4 slower than what the M8 will offer.

Indeed, for a non-M BMW it is massively fast and you'd be very satisfied buying it. It is very good looking and is everything that you'll ever want in a BMW if you ever you dreamed of owning one this expensive that wasn't purely Motorsport.

But, if you're like us, wait for the M8 then, which is, because it will be everything that this 850i XDrive is and a whole lot more. In fact, it will be the fastest BMW ever made and if that's not worth waiting for, what is?
