Back yard jobbie Porsche - or brilliant Porsche?

September 3, 2018

DP Motorsport have made this. It's a Porsche 964 Turbo that doesn't look like one. But, is it nice?

South Africa has its fair share of back yard job creations that for the most part look comical and ridiculous. Still, we love them here at GT MAG because, well, they speak to our car mad creativity, even if their lines are not quite as fresh as factory made ones, with teams of engineers.

Nope, back yard jobbies are the product of homemade sweat, love and vision, and what you get is what you get - head turners for good or bad, and cars that are sometimes so ugly that it defies belief that their owners ever thought they were cool.

But hey, no disrespect. Let a brother enjoy his taste and reap the benefits of his labour. Aweh...

Here then is something seemingly just like that and almost immediately you think, no, why bro, why do this? It's an extensively customised 964 Turbo that doesn't look like one, but instead looks like a Porsche 935 racecar, which it isn't. And, that there is the definition of a backyard jobbie by the way: Something that was what it was, but was given some "love" to make it look like something else.

But, in this case, is it good?

Well, look a little harder Simba if you dare, and if you dare, dare to like it. A product of DP Motorsport, it is proof that you don't necessarily have to take a classic and keep it classic but can, if you want to, backyard-job the hell of it to make this. And this Mfwethu is, unmistakably fresh!

It is an awesome 935 racer from every angle and if you drove it every day you'd be a happier man. Yes, it's road legal too, which is just the perfect type of racecar, isn't it? One that you can use between the lights.

Yoh. This is a head-turner of note and fits right into that zone that we love most. Cars that are so unique that you're not too sure how you feel about them, but how you feel is kind of excited anyway.

Yes, this Porsche excites and we're glad that DP Motorsport hasn't only kept it skin deep. They've given it 336kW, which will feel like a bomb in this, and a roll cage just in case you do something stupid.

It comes with a cd player too by the way, which is that round disk thing that makes music, and boasts electric windows, which for many of you reading is just standard windows.

So, what it all means is this: Somewhere in the world a legend can drive this every day like a he drives a Polo.

Although in this, he will forever be remembered.

He will forever be a legend, even if just his own legend.

That's what back yard jobbies are all about!
