The Jeep Gladiator has just been unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show and South Africa is licking its lips.
Of course we love bakkies. They do things that help us, like assist our cuzzie move house when he needs it. Aweh...
So what happens when the quintessential off-roader that we already love so much grows a South African-loving load bin and becomes a bakkie? Well, nothing really because it won't change how many Hiluxes we buy anyway and that there is the truth of it.
But, it might change how many Wranglers we see because now what's the point of buying one those when you can have the Gladiator instead - a new double cab offering by our favourite American off-roader that is set to take South Africa by storm.
Be assured, we will see a whole lot of these when it arrives because South Africa loves two things more than stealing from VBS. The one is a double cab and the other is an off-roader. Heck, when the two come together, well, say no more brother!
To be honest though, we're not quite sure about the proportions just yet, but that might have to do with the fact that we're not yet used to it. In fact, we suspect that in time we will come to love this a lot.
Especially in this guise: A 3-litre EcoDiesel V6 engine, perfect for them Free State flats. Lekker!
Jeep says that this is "the most capable mid-size [bakkie] ever" boasting “unmatched capability with best-in-class towing and 4×4 payload capacity”.
Indeed, we cannot wait to drive this so expect an epic GT road trip as soon as it arrives. Come on - a bakkie where you can remove the roof and doors? Sounds like motoring heaven to us.
Watch this space.
