The beach buggy returns! Respect

VW is doing its bit at reigniting the retro vehicles we love most. This is their latest - a modern, electric take on the beach buggy. Expect it in Geneva this March!

The coast should prep itself before it wrecks itself! Yes, Joburgers will have a new toy to act beachy in soon enough and this is it: The e-buggy, an electric and retro rebirth of our favourite beach toy - the beach buggy! How cool is that? Very.

And genius too by South Africa's favourite motoring brand. Indeed, VW are deliberately resurrecting emotional cars and electrifying them to show us that we can all love electric cars in the same way that our fathers loved all things petrol. In fact, it's exactly what they're doing:

“A buggy is more than a car," says Klaus Bischoff, head designer at Volkswagen, "It is vibrancy and energy on four wheels. These attributes are embodied by the new e-buggy, which demonstrates how a modern, non-retro interpretation of a classic can look and, more than anything else, the emotional bond that electric mobility can create.”

Emotion, emotion, emotion - that's what it's all about! But, it will need more than that.

The original beach buggy was something special and part of its specialness was its platform - the same ol' platform that propped-up the light Beetle of yesteryear, which, by a coincidence never imagined when it first left the production line, turned out to be extraordinary at rocking beach dunes throughout the 1980s.

Who would have thought?

Without 4X4, the beach buggy still became something to be reckoned with and has set the standard for any successor that was likely to come. So, whether or not this emotional e-buggy will ever be able to really do what the beach buggy did remains to be seen.

Truthfully though, we cannot wait to find out. Pity then that the beach is off limits these days, but hey, there's a dessert in Namibia and a million beaches in Mozambique.

Let's just hope they get charging stations real soon.
