Yoh! It's a Lotus and it's insane

Forget what you thought you knew about speed. You're about to be schooled.

How's this for pretentious? Evija - pronounced 'Ev-eye-ya', which is the next E-named car from the Lotus range and the first of its kind to be EEE-accredited, meaning it's electric, electric, electric!

Jirre. What a design. Over-designed, we'd say, and that would be understatement: This thing has more naughty nooks and folds than an Aunty in Sandy Bay and we're not sure whether to feel a little turned on, a little nauseous or just plain scared.

One thing is for certain though, this is a fantastic looking machine! Those big-ass nostrils out back are awesome and you'd be forgiven if you mistook it for a jet fighter. So answer us this then: Who doesn't want to drive a jet fighter? Exactly.

But, let's go back to that name for a second. It means 'the first in existence' or 'living, to breathe' in Hebrew, which sounds like a hipster tattoo that we don't want. But, it's admittedly neat if you're OCD enough to care about the brothers in 'E' - the Exige, Elise and the Evora. What cars they are...

But now, this - a warning to all hyper cars out there: 1471kW. Yes, you read correctly. Some 1700Nm of torque. Yes, you read correctly again. Jip, it's nothing short of insane.

Of course, only an electric car can give you these sorts of numbers, which are so difficult to contemplate that we're not even sure they're relevant. Until you understand them in context. It's 7.5 times more powerful than a GTI. Outrageous.

So hear this: Sure, 0-100 in under 3 seconds is impressive. But, what if we told you that 300km/h comes in at under 9 seconds, some 4 seconds quicker than a Bugatti Chiron? Would you even believe us or would you call the new, brave, carbon-free world a little insane?

A little? How 'bout a lot brother.

And, for R35-million a piece, it ought to be.
